Missing You "Ashok" !!!
post is especially dedicated to one of my dearest friends "Ashok" who is no more. I got to know him through Orkut. He became a very close friend of mine in such a short period of time, that today when he is not present between us, I really miss him a lot. He was an Indian, living and working in US as an architect and since the time we became friends, he was suffering from blood cancer. Even during that time, he knew that his days are numThis bered, still he was so cheerful and wonderful in his attitude that he inspired me a lot. Yesterday on 20 th October, 2009 I got the news of his death and I was speechless to know that. I have no words to express my feelings. Though we never met each other in person, only knew each other through orkut, gmail and yahoo chats, still we shared such a strong bonding of friendship that whenever I was sad, he was there to motivate me, and when he was low, he shared his feelings with me and I motivated him. This just shows that relationships of any kind are not dependent on whether you have met a person or seen him/her, it is essentially about the kind of feelings you share for each other. If you have genuine feelings for each other, physical distances really do not matter. He used to be in touch with me regularly without fail inspite of his extremely busy schedule. If I for some reason failed to write him a scrap, he used to ask me whether I was in some tension or I was busy. For him even this online friendship was so precious that in whatever way it was possible he was concerend for me and one of my dearest friends Gargi, who was also his friend.
Today when he is no more, I miss him immensely. I miss his jokes, his leg pulling and his presence. I pray that wherever he is, he is in peace and he will always remain as an unforgettable part of my life. "Ashok" you will always be there in my heart. Miss you & love you !!!

Abstract Submission
hey, Good Afternoon !!!
yay !!! I successfully submitted the abstract for my seminar today. Last day I worked on it whole night and got it right there into my hands. Earlier I planned to present the whole work which I am going to do as my thesis in the seminar also but Prof. IKR Rao who is my research guide, asked me to make the presentation concise by not going into so much details, as presenting the kind of thesis which I want to , requires quite a lot of time and research and since the seminars start from November 2009 itself, I will not be able to do such a work so soon. Also I have my GRE and TOEFL due in October. That's why I had to cut down a lot of points in my abstract. Anyway, it does not matter as long as I am able to complete the work efficiently.
Guess what happened today???? We all students were called to the class by Prof. K S Raghavan who is the coordiantor of our seminar, at 2:15pm to decide the dates forthe seminar. He earlier informed us that the procedure for deciding the dates would be "A lottery system" in which there will be 7 pieces of paper having the names of all the 7 students of our class and somebody will pick up the pieces one by one and that's how dates for seminar will be decided, so that there is no question of partiality.
Although I was little happy to know this I was extremely apprehensive about the fact that if I am the first one to present the seminar, then I am "gone" !!! since the seminars start from 4 th of November and I have GRE and TOEFL this month for which I need to study. When I entered the class, everybody including my professor were already present inside the classroom and they all were waiting for me to turn up. Sir told me "Priyanki , we were waiting for you". When I asked the reason, he instructed me to sit on a different bench and gave me those 7 pieces of paper containing names of all the students in my class. I was like "Oh God !!! If I select my own name at first by mistake, there's nobody I can blame also !!! My fate was in my hands." I took a deep breath and selected the first piece of paper, then 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and finally the 7th one.
And the surprising part was I selected my name in the end i.e. my seminar would be the last one and the date is 15th December. Everybody including my professor was wondering and laughing and asked me "how did I manage to draw my name at last ????".....hhehehehhe.....and I had the last laugh. I said "I don't know sir, it happened by sheer coincidence". And at the same time my fellow classmate Shion computed the probability of this kind of occurrence instantly. Now that's a typical ISI student, we think everything in terms of statistics and numbers and data....Me and Shion jokingly say in Bengali "Ei na hole ISI ???" ;)

Seminar in Indian Statistical Institute
Good Afternoon!!! October 6, another hectic day at ISI. Actually since I am in my final year of Masters Degree, I need to write a dissertation/thesis during the last 2 semesters i.e. half during this semester and half during the final semester under the guidance of one of my professors. I am under the research guidance of Prof. I.K. Ravichandra Rao, who is one of the leading scientometrists in India.
Under his guidance I am trying to write a thesis on computing the h-index for all the famous educational institutions in India listed in the Institute for Scientific Information(ISI) Web of Science database by Thomson Reuters. I will be posting the details of the kind of work I will be performing in this regard.
Also, we have one seminar in this semester where all the students in my class have to do some research on a particular topic of interest related to the field of Library and Information Science and present a 45minutes talk in the seminar giving a presentation and that too individually. Ours is a class of 7 students and hence there will be 7 seminars on varied topics related the field of Library & Information Science. The last date to submit the abstract for this seminar is tomorrow October 7 and I have to write a 500 words abstract about my work and I have not even started writing it. Let's see whether I can submit my abstract tomorrow or not !!! On the other hand side, today I had a online discussion session with a personnel working in ISI Thomson Reuters about the manner in which I should access the database to collect data. The person concerned told me about the different kinds of searches which I can perform in the database to collect data. I hope, this discussion will be fruitful in helping me come down to the sort of data set which I need to write my paper.
Apart from this, there's one International Conference on Frontiers of Interface Between Statistics and Sciences coming up in December 2009. I want to send a poster presentation to this conference giving a short description of the work which I will perform for my thesis. The deadline for sending the abstract is 15th of October. Oh God !!! lots of work to do , writing abstract, collecting data,GRE and Toefl studies and the usual class work ...I am just finding no time to relax. I hope the amount of labour I am putting in would show in my work. Bye for today..

Crucial Time of Life
Right now I am facing one of the most crucial points of time in life. I am a graduate student research assistant at Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore center pursuing my MS(Library and Information Science), 2nd year. It has been a long cherished dream of mine to do my studies abroad and to achieve success in my life. However, I was never a very extra ordinary student at school or at college. I was always an average student getting decent marks in most of my exams. So, grabbing a golden opportunity to study in Indian Statistical Institute, which is considered as one of the best elite research institutes in India was a dream come true.
But as they say human beings by nature are greedy. The day I got the admission letter of ISI into my hands, next question came to my mind.....what next ??? After joining ISI, I came to know how different life can be and there are ways to achieve success in life, if you work hard and smart.
With the help of my fellow classmate Shion, I got to know that a Phd degree from a renowned American institute can be a very good step to enhance my career prospects. Shion was very enthusiastic about his ambition to grab a phd admission abroad, and his enthusiasm gave me the significant boost to think in the same direction.
Now , since the application season is near, I have to give my TOEFL and GRE exams, which are on 18th and 26th of this month(October), I am preparing for them. I hope, I get good scores in these exams so that my application becomes stronger. I am feeling really nervous as to what would be the outcome...the only thing which I know is I am trying.
